Sustainable Services

Sustainable Services

Earth Components are part of the Boxcar way. We distinguish ourselves by building ornate and creative pieces driven by simplicity and function. We offer Custom Cabinet design and building, Trim packages, Doors and Furniture exclusively from reclaimed and sustainable materials. Have an existing home or project… We'll work with your interior spaces to create thought provoking, artistic cabinets and furniture pieces. Our Artisans build with wood, metal and copper. Some of our favorite products to work with are as follows: Copper panels from The Bend Bulletin building, old grey fir corral boards from a stockyard overlooking Smith Rocks State Park, Monster timbers and solid steel from Crane Shed 17 in Weed, CA and true dimension 2x8 Pine from the original Bill Healy Race Place. We can also help make your existing home more sustainable with a wide array of services including Spraystone and Earth Plaster wall finishes. Allow us to show you how we can make your new addition or existing home more sustainable.

Sustainable Living

Sustainable Living

We'll be erecting a small greenhouse onsite this Spring to grow our own draught tolerant and "Edible Yard" plants. The idea of an edible yard seems to make good sense as we want to enjoy the yard in a new way as we cultivate our yards for beauty and the kitchen. What we don't eat the other critters will clean up for us. A temporary community garden will be planted this year a few lots over from Recycled Haus #2 for our neighbors use. Fences will not be built in the front half of the lots so sustainable ways of fruit trees and berries may share the property line. More fruit trees adorn the rear of the lots. How about organic chicken eggs harvested from the chickens that help with weeds and insects? Neighbors will share in the pursuit of Sustainable Living on the 1600 Block of Fresno.

Reclamation

Reclamation

Reclamation is an age old practice, born from need and conservation. Resources from the forest, the project and beyond are conserved as a result of reclamation/reuse.

The benefits of dismantling follow:

  • By dismantling we can harvest structurally stable materials ready for resurfacing and milling with local jobs. Deconstructing one nail and one board at a time allows for good salvage rates.
  • Dismantling allows for proper sorting of recyclable materials, thereby decreasing landfill "waste". With more demand in salvage a greater array of recyclable materials could be reused.
  • The greatest benefit derived from using antique materials is that they allow the carpenter to become the student of the materials. The carpenter craftsman becomes an artist looking for the right home for the traveled piece.
  • Resources are preserved for future use both in the forests and in the potential that recycled materials hold.
  • Salvage materials create new jobs in the field of deconstruction and in the areas of woodworking.
  • Recycled materials are harder and more stable than fresh lumber because the wood was aged in its place of origin.
  • Salvage materials don't need distressing to make them look antique. Each piece of wood was distressed by time with nature, as natural as you can get.

Boxcar Productions is in the business of building sustainable homes. Conservation of materials and energy are our ambition. We build homes in a sustainable and responsible manner both in materials use and energy conservation.

Boxcar Productions is different because we are focused on building a house as healthy as possible. Our air is safe to breath and our materials are safe to touch. Our houses collect the energy of the sun and earth to warm you on cold winter nights and cool you naturally on hot summer days.

We collect many of our finished materials by harvesting them from a 220 mile radius as best as possible. This can make for a fantastic Easter egg hunt. Our materials are collected one nail and one board at a time and then stored for use tomorrow. Much energy is saved by reuse and a house can be given a soul to express its uniqueness.
